How Do I Clean My Quartz Sleeve?

The UV bulb is protected from water via a quartz sleeve. It may be necessary to clean the quartz sleeve during your annual bulb replacement. Pre-filters will help remove sediment before it reaches the UV treatment system and will also help the unit be more efficient since particles in the water may block the UV rays.

If the light coming from the view port is very faint or is not apparent at all, your quartz sleeve may be dirty. Alternatively, your bulb may be failing or have already failed. Check the system to diagnose the problem.

Cleaning Instructions

The process of cleaning a quartz sleeve is more involved that a bulb change and may require the assistance of a professional plumber. The quartz sleeve is extremely fragile and should be handled delicately. To clean the quartz sleeve in a Pristine Water Systems unit:

  1. Disconnect power to the unit. (This should be done before conducting any maintenance on the unit.)

  2. Shut off the water to the unit. This is where a three valve bypass is useful.

  3. Place a bucket below the unit. Have a towel ready to catch spray.

  4. Unscrew the cord grip and remove the bulb.

  5. Relocate the electronic ballast and the bulb to avoid any potential water spray.

  6. Slowly unscrew the end nuts to gradually release water pressure.

  7. Allow the water to drain from the unit.

  8. Remove the o-rings from the quartz sleeve.

  9. Gently glide the quartz sleeve out of the disinfection chamber.

  10. Wash the quartz sleeve with warm water and a mild soap. Use a soft cloth to wipe and dry the sleeve.

  11. Gently reinsert the quartz sleeve. Do not insert a cracked quartz sleeve.

  12. Center the sleeve between the two ends.

  13. Lubricate the orings with silicone grease.

  14. Slide the lubricated o-rings onto each end.

  15. Gently hand-tighten the end nuts. Do not over-tighten or the quartz sleeve will crack.

  16. Slowly turn on the water to gradually increase water pressure while checking for any leaks.

  17. If there are not any leaks, reinsert the bulb and reconnect the power.
